Beyond the pyramids
Through medieval Cairo
Many travellers arrive in Cairo thinking first of the pyramids. The city itself deserves time too. Founded in the tenth century, Historic Cairo preserves streets where mosques, madrasas, hammams and fountains stand close together. This is not the landscape of Giza: it reveals another period and another way to understand the capital.
Leave room for these neighbourhoods alongside the plateau. As you walk, notice how façades, doorways and places of worship follow one another. Then return to the Nile, where the present-day city takes over again. Moving between these two settings adds depth to a stay that could otherwise become a brief stop at the pyramids.

Giza and Historic Cairo are different visits
The Giza plateau is part of the Memphis necropolis; Historic Cairo is a separate UNESCO World Heritage site. Both can belong to one stay, but they are different places and tell stories from different periods.
How long should you stay in Cairo?
If the pyramids are your priority, allow a full visiting day for them. Two or three days in the city give you room for Historic Cairo and a museum without packing everything into one outing. These are pacing suggestions, to adjust around arrival times and transfers.
What to look for in Historic Cairo
Around Al-Muizz Street, mosques, madrasas, fountains and hammams show how the city developed long after the pyramids. Leave time to walk between the buildings: doors, passages and street life are part of the visit.
Where can Cairo lead next?
Cairo can start a journey south to Luxor and Aswan if you want to follow Egypt’s history along the Nile. It can also precede a seaside break in Hurghada. Choose the regions first, then check connections and the time you really have.
